We thank a member of our Norwegian language class for calling our attention to this interesting memorial located on the shore of Weymouth, Massachusetts. Tribute is paid to the heroism of U.S. Merchant Marine Chief Engineer Donald Haviland of Weymouth for giving his lifeboat seat to a younger crew member after his ship, the SS Henry Bacon, was hit while on the infamous Murmansk run during World War II. They happened to be carrying Norwegian refugees. But of even more interest, this Merchant Marine supply line to Russia extended from ports in Scotland and Iceland to Murmansk in Russia, right along the coast of occupied Norway.
